The region of Piemonte located in the North Western part of Italy, and it's the second biggest region in the country. The territory is mostly mountainous (43%) followed respectively by hills and plains (30% and 27%).
Mountains, plains, lakes and rivers are the characteristics of Piemonte, which has in Torino cultural expressions worth of its history. Located in the plains, with roman origins, the city does not forget its mountainous vocation, the middle point between the Alps and the place where the Po becomes more vigorous.
The Palazzi umbertini, the Basilica di Superga, Supinigi and the works of Guarini, are the beautiful background of the town.
Churches, sanctuaries and monasteries of witnesses of a cultural and spiritual past. A past whose marks can still be seen, like in the Sacro Monte della Santissima Trinità.
The Valsesia, under the Monte Rosa, offers the possibility of practicing winter sports in the Parco Naturale dell'Alta Valsesia, with trips and hikes on the glacier, while the summer invites the visitors to promenades in Varallo and Borgosesia or in the Parco Naturale del Monte Fenera.
Already renown in roman times were the waters of Acqui Terme, today an importan thermal location which can be used as base for trips in the surroundings, in the Parco Fluviale del Po, Valenza, or the l'Abbazia di Rivalta Scrivia.
There are many lakes in this region, the Lago Maggiore, with the Isole Borromee and Isola Bella, the Mergozzo, from which it is possible to reach Verbania and Orta, with the isle of San Giulio.
The products of the woods and the mountains enrich the tables of the region, with mushrooms, truffles, cheese like the Tomino or the caprino della Val Vigezzo. Known and appreciated throughout the world are the wines Barolo, Barbera and Barbaresco, perfect for strong dishes. |
